Mt. Meru Trekking
Trip Overview
Part of Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain and a perfect acclimatization trek for Kilimanjaro.
As most climbers choose to summit the more popular Kilimanjaro, visitors to Meru often have the mountain to themselves. Standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), a climb up Meru’s narrow ridge offers stunning panoramic views of the Rift Valley, plus Meru’s crater and ash cone lying several thousand feet below. You also get a great vantage across Arusha National Park and up to the Kilimanjaro summit.
Meru is Africa’s fifth highest mountain. The route to the summit passes through grassland, montane forest, gorgeous heather and moorland. Hundreds of species of birds, rhino, elephant, buffalo, baboon, warthog, black and white Colobus monkey and duiker are all found on Meru.
Trekking & Climbing
Climbing Mount Meru is a popular option for trekkers, often used as an acclimatization hike before attempting Kilimanjaro. The ascent typically takes 3 to 4 days and follows the Momella Route, which begins at the Arusha National Park gate.
Highlights of the trek include:
Walking through diverse ecological zones—from grassland and rainforest to alpine desert

Mount Meru
Often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is in no one’s shadow once you begin the climb. It’s steep, wild, and utterly captivating. Located in Arusha National Park, it offers a quieter, sharper trek with ridgeline walks, crater views, and a clear sense of isolation.
What makes Mount Meru such a powerful climb isn’t just its size, it’s the silence. The trail cuts through forest where giraffes and buffalo roam freely, and then quickly gains altitude as you hug exposed edges overlooking ancient volcanic scars. For some of our clients, Mount Meru is a warm-up for Kilimanjaro climb. For some others, it’s the main act – a serious trek that’s often underestimated, but never forgotten.
Although hiking distances between huts can seem short, it’s important to allow enough time for proper acclimatization. The mountain trail on Meru is quite steep while the road trail is more gradual. We recommend a four day climb on Meru, although fitter climbers may choose to hike the mountain in three days. If climbing Meru as an acclimatization trek for Kilimanjaro, we recommend at least one full day of rest in Arusha between climbs. You may also choose to go on a short safari between treks.
All Meru climbs begin with a short game drive through Arusha National Park where you will likely see zebra, giraffe, cape buffalo, warthog, and other antelope species.
